Professor Marinella Marmo

Professor Marinella Marmo holds a PhD in Applied Social Science from the University of Lancaster (UK) and an LLB (Honours) from the Università di Salerno (Italy). Prior to joining Flinders Law School in 2005, she held positions at the University of Leicester and Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.

Professor Marmo is a leading expert on human mobility, human rights, and gendered criminology. Her research has shaped global understanding in these areas, receiving citations from scholars and high-level policymakers worldwide. Her work has been featured in international and national media, informed a British Parliamentary Q&A session, and contributed to documentary productions. She actively engages with national and state inquiries, guiding evidence-based policy development.

She has published extensively on transnational criminal matters, with notable works including A Research Agenda for a Human Rights Centred Criminology, Narrating Injustice Survival, Transnational Crime and Criminal Justice, Race, Gender and the Body, and Crime, Justice and Human Rights. Across her career, she has produced more than 40 articles and chapters in top-tier journals and with distinguished academic publishers.

Professor Marmo’s research has attracted funding from a range of sources, including the EU–Australian Government joint initiative, the Australian Research Council (ARC), the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA), the Ian Potter Foundation, and the South Australian Law Foundation. She currently serves as a Chief Investigator on multiple projects examining contemporary forms of modern slavery—including forced marriage—in Australia and South Australia, contributing to local and national policy initiatives.

An award-winning educator, Professor Marmo earned the 2023 BGL Team Teaching Award for leading the Flinders Criminology team’s curriculum renewal. She was also the first recipient of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Criminology Excellence in Teaching Award, demonstrating her academic distinction and leadership in advancing criminology education.
