Professor James Smith
Professor James Smith is a Professor of Health and Social Equity abd also serves as Deputy Dean of Rural and Remote Health – NT.
With over two decades of experience in rural and remote health policy, practice, and research, Professor Smith’s work prioritizes improving health and education outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Before joining Flinders, he held professorial roles at the Menzies School of Health Research and Charles Darwin University, specializing in areas such as alcohol and other drugs, men’s health, and Indigenous higher education.
Internationally and nationally recognized for his expertise in health promotion and men’s health, Professor Smith is the immediate past Editor-in-Chief of the Health Promotion Journal of Australia, a Fellow and life member of the Australian Health Promotion Association, and a Fellow of the Australasian College of Health Service Management. He serves as Deputy Chair of the Association for Alcohol and Other Drugs Agencies NT and holds academic affiliations with the Menzies School of Health Research, the University of Queensland, Deakin University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Saskatchewan.
Through his applied social health research and leadership, Professor Smith contributes to evidence-based policies and programs that address systemic inequities in health, advancing meaningful improvements in the well-being and social outcomes of rural, remote, and Indigenous communities.
