Professor Gerry Redmond

For over two decades, Professor Redmond’s research has examined marginalization as experienced by young people in Australia and internationally—whether at school, among peers, or within their communities. Central to his work is amplifying young people’s voices, enabling them to articulate how their lived experiences affect their opportunities and how they navigate poverty and marginalization. Rather than proposing simple solutions, Professor Redmond’s research seeks to draw the attention of policymakers, practitioners, and advocates across health, education, community services, and local government to the realities and insights that young people themselves identify.

A sociologist and social policy analyst, Professor Redmond joined Flinders University in 2012 following appointments at the University of Cambridge (UK), UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre (Italy), and the University of New South Wales. He has secured over $5 million in research funding and served as Chief Investigator on six Australian Research Council (ARC) grants since 2009, including the Wellbeing in Adolescence project (2019–2023) and the Opportunities and Contributions project (2023–2026). He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and has advised the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare on child, youth, gender, and family statistics. He also served as a member of the ARC College of Experts from 2020 to 2022.

Through his work, Professor Redmond champions the importance of listening to those who are often least heard—marginalized young people—and stresses that their perspectives can inform meaningful changes in policy and practice to improve their lives and futures.
