Dr Sahana Sarkar
Dr Sahana Sarkar's research examines the ways technology can facilitate gendered and sexual violence, focusing particularly on experiences in the Global South. She completed her PhD in Criminology at Queensland University of Technology in 2023, exploring women survivors’ responses to and the impact of technology-facilitated sexual violence in India. Dr Sarkar’s work also investigates how digital literacy—and factors such as marginalized identities—shape individuals’ safety practices online.
Prior to joining Flinders, she served as a Lecturer at St Joseph’s College in Bengaluru and contributed to research at the Centre for Internet and Society, focusing on privacy issues in India. She has also collaborated with Praxis on capacity-building initiatives, including a month-long participatory video workshop with sex workers in Maharashtra, India. Through her research and teaching, Dr Sarkar aims to inform policies and interventions that address technology-facilitated harms and advance social justice and resilience in digital environments.
