Greg Hutchinson AM

Greg has played a part in the Centre for Social Impact from the outset, as a member of the working group developing the CSI charter in early 2007.

He organised a Bain pro bono team to work with the founding CEO (Prof. Peter Shergold AC) on the operating plan and financial structure for CSI. Greg then joined the initial Board of CSI in 2008 for 3 years and then rejoined in 2014 for a further 3 years. He is also a member of the CSI Advisory Council and kindly fund a CSI scholarship for Indigenous women.

Bain & Company

Greg has spent most of his business career as a strategy consultant with Bain & Company, a global strategy consultancy. He has led multi-year client relationships with major corporations in Europe and Asia, advising boards and senior executives on their strategic growth and operational change programs.

During his 44 years with Bain, he served in several leadership roles, including Managing Partner of the firm’s operations in the UK, Australia and Asia Pacific region. He has also served in global governance roles.

Returning to Australia in 1989 after 13 years in Europe, he led the establishment of Bain’s offices in Australia, China, Korea, Singapore and South Africa.

In 2000 Greg transitioned from full-time Partner to Advisory Partner. In this role, he still works across India, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Australia.

Community Roles

The transition to Advisory Partner has allowed Greg to spend the past 24 years deeply involved in community as a social entrepreneur and director, initially as founding CEO and then Deputy Chairman of Workplace Giving Australia.

In 2010 he became a founding Director of Goodstart Early Learning , the largest early learning organisation in Australia and one of the largest social enterprises.

From 2015 he was an advisor to, then Chairman and Director of the Paul Ramsay Foundation , the largest Australian foundation at the time and one of the 50 largest globally, until his retirement in 2022.

He has also been an early-stage Director of Centre for Social Impact, Women’s Community Shelters and ShareGift, and a Director of Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, The Brandenburg Foundation and Bell Shakespeare.

He has also been an advisor/ambassador for several other organisations with a particular focus on Indigenous education, intergenerational disadvantage, microfinance and community capacity building.

Most recently Greg became a Trustee of The Nature Conservancy (Australia) . He is also leading a pro bono program, supporting a prominent Indigenous organisation, focussed on empowerment of remote communities.

Other roles

Prior to joining Bain, Greg spent 10 years as a banker in Australia and the UK working primarily in foreign exchange and sovereign risk analysis.

He is a former director of private equity firm Macquarie Direct Investment and a former visiting lecturer in Mathematics of Finance and Demography at Macquarie University.

Greg was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to community, philanthropy, business and social enterprise in the 2014 Australia Day honours list.

He holds a BA(hons) in econometrics and MSc in business.
