Vale Professor Gemma Carey

It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected loss of our colleague, Professor Gemma Carey.

Her passing has come as a shock to many within our community. Gemma was deeply devoted to her family and loved by those closest to her, who are now navigating an unimaginable loss.

Gemma was an integral part of the Centre for Social Impact (CSI) community over many years, including in her role with the UNSW CSI team as Research Director, and as National Research Director for the CSI network from 2020 to 2022. She was fierce in her advocacy for reforming systems and structures that contribute to inequality. Her belief in creating equitable living conditions and opportunities shaped her academic contributions and work at CSI. She was regularly called upon for her expertise in health policy, disability services and support, and in particular her Australian Research Council project into the impact of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Gemma's international academic contributions included 4 published books and over 100 journal articles across a breadth of issues including systems change, joined-up government approaches, policy and public health, and social service markets including the NDIS. She held a PhD in social policy and population health from the University of Melbourne.

Professor Gemma Carey’s legacy will live on through the lives she touched and the family she loved.

Our thoughts are with her family during this incredibly difficult time.
