CSI Flinders experts help shape climate agenda at UN forum in South Korea
Professor Svetlana Bogomolova, Deputy Director of the Centre for Social Impact at Flinders University (CSI Flinders), and CSI member, Dr Laura Lesar , were honoured to attend the United Nations Climate Technology Centre & Network’s Pacific NDE Forum and Capacity Building Workshop on AI4ClimateAction in South Korea.
Invited to share their expertise in social impact and the tools for climate change mitigation and adaptation through a presentation and co-design workshops, Professor Svetlana Bogomolova discussed the positive and negative social impacts of Artificial Intelligence, and Dr Laura Lesar shared cutting-edge AI solutions for addressing the social impacts of climate change.
During the visit, the team also facilitated co-design workshops in collaboration with the UN CTCN’s Secretariat. This was an outstanding opportunity to shape international agendas in the important area of climate action, social impact, and the role of technological innovation.
The event was an invaluable platform to build relationships with Pacific nations and small-island destination states including Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Palau, Cook Islands, Nauru, and Maldives, as well as with Advisory Board Members and Secretariats of the UN Climate Technology Centre & Network and the United Nations Environmental Program—establishing the foundation for future collaborations with CSI Flinders and the international agenda on climate change and social impact.
UN Climate Technology Centre & Network’s Secretariat commented on Professor Bogomolova and Dr. Lesar’s expert facilitation, noting that the participating Pacific nations representatives provided “positive feedback” about their week long engagement.
The Pacific nation representatives expressed their gratitude for “sharing valuable information on how to incorporate social impact in future climate technology solution development”.
The week prior, the team had the opportunity to showcase their expertise to the international leaders in Asia at a parallel forum on AI4ClimateAction. Professor Svetlana Bogomolova, Dr Laura Lesar, and Peter R McDonald presented online on the positive social impacts of AI, social risks associated with AI, and AI tools to address the social impacts of climate.
