Manifesto Towards a Thriving Not-for-Profit Community Sector A recent survey of 1500 respondents has formed the basis of a manifesto 'Towards a Thriving Not-for-Profit Sector'. This manifesto has been sent to the leaders of all political parties for comment. Labor has outlined key commitments that respond to recommendations in the manifesto. The survey was conducted by Pro Bono Australia in collaboration with the Centre for Social Impact, and was completed by people working in the not-for-profit sector. |

Corporate Responsibility Index - Energy Australian 2009 Winner The 2009 Corporate Responsibility Index (CRI) results are now in. 113 companies participating globally including 14 Australian and New Zealand companies. Areas examined included workplace practices, community engagement and social and environmental impact. The winner for best overall Australian performance was Energy Australia. The CRI was developed to improve corporate responsibility in line with business strategy. It provides a benchmark for companies committed to managing, measuring and reporting their impact on society and the environment. |

Disclosures on Social Investment Report The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants has recently released the results of a survey that looks at how well Australian companies are disclosing their social investment. Of the ASX top 50 companies, the best performers were AMP, NAB, GPT Group, Westpac, with ANZ the winner. This study was conducted in conjunction with the Net Balance Foundation.

Finding Australia's Social Enterprises (FASES) Report A recent report by the Queensland University of Technology and Social Traders has examined Australia’s social enterprises. It is estimated there are now more than 20,000 social enterprises operating nationally, with 29% of not-for-profits operating some form of business venture. Social enterprises have a community mission but derive income from trading which is reinvested back into the organisation. |

Women's Subscription Enterprise Launch - The Big Issue The Big Issue has launched 'The Women’s Subscription Enterprise', a new social business that will provide employment for women in distribution centres in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. This initiative attempts to support homeless and disadvantaged women, understanding that they have different issues. Selling The Big Issue magazines on the streets is not an option for many of them. The Productivity Commission Inquiry into Disability Care and Support is calling for written submissions. The Commission has been given the task of conducting an inquiry into the costs, benefits and feasibility of a social insurance approach to supporting people with a disability, their families and carers. The Commission is currently conducting public consultations, holding hearings around the country and calling for written submissions, with more than 148 submissions received so far.
