CSI Update: Issue 34

October 31, 2011

CEO's Message

I am delighted to confirm that our new CEO Andrew Young will join CSI in January 2012. Andrew is presently CEO of the innovative youth cancer charity, CanTeen Australia.

Andrew recently met with all of us and indicated that he is “hugely excited about joining CSI”. He looks forward to bringing his experience and learnings “to the mission of creating beneficial social impact across Australia". We are equally looking forward to having him on board. In the meantime he will meet with our Advisory Councils in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth over the next couple of months and then join CSI staff for a strategy day in December.

I will be continuing as Macquarie Group Foundation Professor of Social Impact.

Over the past month we have hosted a range of successful events. I welcomed Foreign Affairs Minister Kevin Rudd to the fourth Social Impact Lecture held in collaboration with the Qantas Foundation. He gave an excellent perspective on the changing nature of corporate responsibility. PwC also hosted the first Measuring Social Impact Conference which had a very positive response. Videos are available here.

We look forward to releasing new research in the coming month and gearing up for the CSI (UWA) Annual Conference on Indigenous Business in December.

Macquarie Group Foundation Professor

Natalie Walker talks to Social Business about the Indigenous Opportunities Policy

This month’s Sky Social Business program had an Indigenous theme. It featured an interview with Natalie Walker CEO of the Australian Indigenous Minority Suppliers Council (AIMSC). AIMSC was established to promote the services of indigenous suppliers with large corporations and government agencies. According to Natalie Walker,  AIMSC acts as “a dating agency for business”.

Through the support of AIMSC, indigenous SMEs have been awarded $21.7 million in contracts over the past 21 months. Natalie believes that the new Indigenous Opportunities Policy (IOP) will provide significant support as it encourages large suppliers to the Australian Government to subcontract to Indigenous businesses. The IOP is part of the Government’s commitment to Closing the Gap on Indigenous disadvantage.

We also heard from Aboriginal business leader Michael McLeod about Message Stick Communications,

October’s Social Business program featured news of the launch of three new reports: the Scanlon–Monash Social Cohesion Index, the Caught Short Interim Report and the Australian Institute of Company Directors / CSI Directors Social Impact Study 2011. The program also profiled social business Gideon Shoes.
