In this Yakety Yak interview we hear of the personal journey that inspired and motivates businessman and philanthropist Andrew Forrest. Growing up on the family property ‘Minderoo Station’ in regional WA,
Andrew spent his much of his formative years with the local indigenous community exploring the land and their culture. Educated until age 9 at schools with a majority of indigenous children, he formed many lasting friendships but it was his relationship with head stockman Scotty Black that had a profound impact on his life, inspiring much of his inspiration and motivation to address indigenous disparity.
Andrew has been the driving force behind the Australian Employment Covenant, a policy initiative designed to provide those prepared to work a clear pathway to employment and GenerationOne, a movement to bring all Australians together to end the disparity.
Through his charitable organisation, The Australian Children’s Trust he works with indigenous communities, such as Fitzroy Crossing on creating sustainable solutions for those facing social disadvantage. And through the Fortescue Metals Group’s Vocational Training and Employment Centre he is equipping members of the indigenous communities for employment in the mining industry. |
