Dr Teasdale will draw on UK research that explores social enterprise as a potential policy solution to homelessness, particularly as an avenue for employment.
Organisations operating in this field negotiate tensions between social and commercial considerations. Simon Teasdale will talk about the strategies used by social enterprises to negotiate this trade-off and compete in the market with private sector organisations. He will also look at the wider implications for government, civil society and homeless people, and discuss with his audience how current research might be relevant in the Australian context.
The event will take place on Wednesday, 20 February, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm at the Red Centre, fourth floor, room 4035 at the UNSW Kensington campus. To register your attendance or make further enquiries, contact Danielle Del Pizzo. Refreshments will be served.
Simon Teasdale is Research Fellow at Birmingham University’s Third Sector Research Centreand Associate Editor of Social Enterprise Journal. His research interests include social enterprise, the marketization of the third sector and the impact on service users. On his current visit at the Centre for Social Impact, University of New South Wales, he is exploring the international transfer of social enterprise policies. He serves on a variety of academic and policy committees, and has presented his work to a wide range of audiences, ranging from MPs at the House of Commons to (far more knowledgeable) homeless people. His work has recently been published in Economy and Society, Housing Studies, Public Money and Management, and Public Policy and Administration. |
