Fairtrade: profits and ethics

January 23, 2012
Keywords: Community wellbeing, Ethics -  unmet social needs, fair trade, social value creation

CSI researcher Fanny Salignac has been awarded a PhD in Business Ethics from the University of Sydney.

Fanny’s thesis explores the institutionalisation of the Fairtrade movement with a specific focus on retailers and producers.

Fairtrade is a certification program that aims to provide farmers and workers in the developing world with fairer terms of trade including better prices and working conditions. As part of her PhD research, Fanny travelled to Vietnam and India to experience first-hand the working conditions for Fairtrade certified farmers.

Using case studies, Fanny examines the idea of institutional entrepreneurship and the reconciliation between profit-seeking and ethical-seeking behaviour.

At CSI Fanny is currently working on measuring the social return from education and training programs for not-for-profit managers, and will further develop the centre’s work on ethics.

CSI congratulates Dr Fanny Salignac on achieving her PhD. To read Fanny's thesis click on the 'Download Document' link above.
