At the invitation of AusAID, Professor Peter Shergold visited the Solomon Islands from 28 June - 2 July to provide support and advice in governance issues. He met with the Prime Minister, Dr Derek Sikva, to discuss both public service and civil society. He had lunch with the Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs, who is working on a Memorandum of Understanding between government and nongovernment organisations. In a meeting hosted by the Development Services Exchange, Professor Shergold also met with an impressive group of community leaders: Ruth Maetala from the Hope School for street children, Florence Nodoro from Kustom Gaden, Thelma Namusu from World Vision, Moses Ramo from the Solomon Islands Indigenous Peoples' Association and Dove Sale from the cooperative Solomon Islands Monero.
It is hoped that over the year ahead CSI will develop a program to support the valuable role played by civil society organisations in the South Pacific.
