Laurel Draffen is the first winner of the AGSM Alumni Community Leader Scholarship.
Laurel, who currently manages the Good Practice Unit at the NSW Federation of Housing Associations, will commence her studies in 2009. The scholarship covers the entire AGSM MBA (Executive) program. Laurel also receives fee waivers on CSI executive courses for the duration her studies.
Alister McEwin, chair of the selection committee, said Laurel was a unanimous choice. The scholarship was meant to encourage talented individuals working in the community to undertake the ABSM Executive MBA program, he said. Key qualities sought by the selectors were motivation, experience and the ability to contribute to the program and the Australian School of Business community.
Laurel said she was keen to build commercial and business capacity in the not for profit sector. "The MBA (Executive) program will help me take my skills to a new level."
She has served as a board member for several not-for-profit organizations. Her experience also includes providing environmental education in the Philippines and services for refugees and asylum seekers in the U.K. She will continue in her job while studying for her MBA.
