Emeritus Professor Richard Henry AM

Richard has had a distinguished career in medicine and academic leadership. He joined the University of New South Wales in 1997 as the Foundation John Beveridge Professor of Paediatrics. He served as Head of the School of Paediatrics and then of the School of Women’s and Children’s Health before moving to the role of Senior Associate Dean in the Faculty of Medicine. He was Acting Dean of the Faculty of Medicine then Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education and Quality Improvement). Richard appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2007 for service to paediatric respiratory medicine as a clinician, researcher, educator and mentor, and serving in a range of roles with professional medical organisations. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Sydney and trained in paediatrics in Sydney and in Nottingham. His first continuing University appointment was as Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales where he worked from 1984 to 1997. During this time he was promoted to Associate Professor and then appointed as Professor. He has a strong academic background in research and in teaching and learning. He also has extensive managerial experience in the University and the health sectors. He works as a consultant in health and higher education. Current unpaid roles include Pro-Chancellor of UNSW Australia, Trustee of Sydney Grammar School and Director of Children's Cancer Institute.
